Most of Spain’s fiestas have a historical or religious background. However, there is very little encouragement needed for a Spaniard to hold a fiesta. Every village and town has its own patron saint, which is honoured annually on its saints day. These lively festivities are to be found throughout the year.
Maybe you even get the chance to visit Semana Santa in Lorca; this is the “Holy week” before Easter with beautiful processions. Or what about the Moros y Cristianos festival in Alcoy, where the triumph of the Christians over the Moors is re-enacted and celebrated. All very worthwhile to join the temperamental Spaniards in their festivities and see how they live.
